Do I need any experience to book a lesson?

No experience needed at all. We work with complete beginners regularly and start every first lesson at your comfort level — no pressure, no rushing.

What age do I need to be to take lessons?

You must hold a valid CA DMV Instruction Permit. The minimum age for a permit in California is 15½. We work with students of all ages, from teenagers to adults in their 60s and beyond.

Do I need a learner's permit before my first lesson?

Yes. California law requires you to have a valid Instruction Permit before driving with an instructor. If you need help with the written permit test, we can point you in the right direction. You may also drive if you have a valid license from another US state or an international drivers license.

Can you issue the 6-hour completion certificate required for minors?

Unfortunately, no. The Certificate of Completion of Behind-the-Wheel Driver Training (DL 400D) can only be issued by a brick-and-mortar driving school. L.A. DRVNG is operated by an independent, private instructor. Where our services come in handy: it's recommended that minors get 50 hours of practice before testing, including 10 hours of night driving, and traditional schools mostly operate weekday business hours. Our services are available 7 days a week, including evenings, and we come to you — so once your teen has their DL 400D from a traditional school, we can help knock out the rest of the 50 hours flexibly, often at a much lower rate than a traditional school since we don't carry the overhead of an office location or a fleet of many vehicles.

What languages are lessons available in?

Lessons are available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese at no extra charge. Just let us know your preference when you book.

Where do lessons take place?

We cover most of West Los Angeles including Santa Monica, Culver City, Venice, Marina del Rey, Mar Vista, Playa Vista, Westwood, Beverly Hills, Beverlywood, Cheviot Hills, West Hollywood, Palms, and El Segundo. We pick you up and drop you off at the location of your choice.

How long is each lesson?

Each lesson is 2 hours long. If you'd like a shorter or longer session, just let us know and we will do our best to accomodate your needs.

What days and times are available?

We offer lessons 7 days a week, from early morning to early evening. Exact availability depends on current bookings — check our booking page for live availability.

Can I reschedule or cancel a lesson?

Yes. Rescheduling is always free for package bookings. For single lessons, we ask for at least 24 hours advance notice. All cancellations must be done with at least 24 hours advance notice, otherwise are subject to a late cancellation fee.

What car do you use?

Make and models of cars may vary within the fleet, but all vehicles are clean, well-maintained, currently registered and properly insured, and equipped with dual controls on the instructor's side, front- and rear-facing dash cams, extra rearview mirrors and external signage for safety.

How many lessons will I need before my DMV test?

It depends on your starting point. Complete beginners are typically test-ready after 8–12 hours. Students with some experience may only need 4–6 hours. We'll give you an honest assessment after your first lesson.

Do you know the DMV test routes?

Every DMV office has multiple testing routes, and the examiner has the discretion of choosing any of them on the day of your test. Rather than memorizing a specific route, we focus on what actually matters — understanding the examiner's instructions and performing every maneuver correctly, anywhere. That's what gets you through the test.

Can I use your car for my DMV road test?

Yes. Our DMV Test Day packages includes use of our vehicle for your test.

What if I fail my road test?

It happens — don't be discouraged. We'll review exactly what the examiner flagged and offer a focused prep session at a discounted rate to address those specific areas before your next attempt.

Do you offer lessons specifically for nervous or anxious drivers?

Yes. Our Lessons for Nervous Drivers program is a one-on-one, step-by-step approach built for people who feel overwhelmed on the freeway, are returning to driving after a long break, or feel shaken after a past accident. Most students complete it in 10–12 hours.

Is this the same as therapy for driving anxiety?

No — it's driving-specific, one-on-one coaching from a DMV-certified instructor, not licensed psychotherapy. If you're managing a clinical anxiety disorder or PTSD, we recommend pairing these lessons with a licensed therapist.

How do I pay?
