Waymo is now picking up passengers in LA — here's what it means

November 2024

Waymo's driverless taxis started operating commercially in Los Angeles in 2024, and I've had a lot of students ask me the same question: does this mean they don't need to learn how to drive?

Short answer: not even close.

Waymo currently operates in limited areas — parts of the Westside, some of DTLA. It doesn't go to the Valley, doesn't do airport runs reliably, and costs more than an Uber. It's impressive technology but it's not a replacement for having your own license, your own car, and the freedom that comes with it.

More practically: California law still requires a valid driver's license for most employment situations, car rentals, and as a primary form of ID. None of that changes because a robotaxi drives down Wilshire.

Learn to drive. Get your license. Then enjoy watching the Waymo go by.
