New California traffic laws that took effect in January 2025

January 2025

Every January, California's new traffic legislation takes effect. Here are the ones most relevant to my students.

Speed cameras in work zones

AB 645 authorized automated speed enforcement cameras in certain highway work zones. Fines start at $50 for the first offense. If you're doing your BTW test near any active construction, be especially mindful of posted speeds.

Bicycle and pedestrian right-of-way updates

Updates to CVC 21950 clarify that drivers must yield to pedestrians in crosswalks even when they're still on the curb preparing to cross — not just when they've already stepped out. This is an area I test students on specifically because examiners watch for it.

As always, the DMV tests you on what the law says, not what drivers around you actually do. Know the rules as written.
