The examiner took an unexpected route — she passed anyway

May 2023 · Luiza, Culver City

Luiza — a fellow Luiz, in feminine form — passed her behind-the-wheel test on the first attempt, after just one simulation session.

There's an interesting detail worth sharing. We had practiced the two most common test routes at the Culver City DMV. But the examiner that day took a slightly different path.

That can happen. Depending on the day, the time, road conditions — construction, heavy traffic, detours — the examiner has the discretion to adjust the route. It's not random, but it's not always predictable either.

The fact that Luiza passed on a route she hadn't specifically practiced is exactly the point. She wasn't just memorizing a path — she knew what to do and how to do it, wherever she was driving.

That's what real preparation looks like. The test is officially called the "Driving Performance Evaluation" — a DPE. It's a performance, a structured evaluation, and it doesn't fully reflect what it's actually like to drive in a city like Los Angeles day to day. But pass it properly and you're ready for both.

Congratulations, Luiza.
