Failed on a flashing yellow arrow — passed second time with 2 errors

September 2023 · Angélica, Culver City

Angélica had driving experience, but she'd spent years living abroad in cities where a car wasn't necessary. Back in LA, she found me through social media and we got to work.

We did an evaluation session, a simulation, and scheduled the test. Her progress was noticeable.

On the first attempt, she made a critical error on a left turn at a signalized intersection with arrow signals. The arrow was flashing yellow — and the way she completed the maneuver caused an oncoming vehicle to slow down to accommodate her. The examiner called it unsafe.

This is worth explaining. Traffic signals across the US are being updated, and the Culver City DMV neighborhood now has at least four intersections with flashing yellow arrows. They don't all behave the same way — some go from green arrow to flashing yellow; others go from red directly to flashing yellow, skipping green entirely. A flashing yellow arrow means yield to oncoming traffic and proceed only when fully clear.

On her second attempt, Angélica passed with just two errors. Congratulations — and good luck from here.
