CA DMV SUSPENDS ONLINE KNOWLEDGE TESTING
Users of the DMV website via mobile devices saw basically the same thing:

The reasons behind this decision remain unclear, but the move represents a step backward in the licensing process for Class C (non-commercial) licenses. The online testing option, introduced in March 2022, was a convenient alternative for many applicants.
Attempts to contact the DMV for clarification yielded limited results. A DMV representative indicated that the decision to disable the online testing option originated with "system programmers," but it is unclear whether these programmers are DMV employees or contractors.
The DMV’s online testing system, known as MVProctor (or MVP), operates under Proctortrack—a product suite from Verificient Technologies. Founded in 2012 and headquartered in New York City, Verificient specializes in identity verification and remote monitoring solutions. While the DMV's online testing integrity has not been publicly questioned, Verificient Technologies has faced controversies regarding its monitoring systems and reliance on AI over human proctors.
In 2020, Verificient’s Proctortrack system experienced a security breach, where an unauthorized individual accessed one of its servers. This incident raised significant privacy concerns, as analyses suggested fundamental lapses in the company’s data security practices. Additionally, online forums like Reddit feature numerous reports of technical issues with the MVP software, including compatibility problems with devices or browsers and glitches that frustrate users.
A DMV employee also mentioned frequent complaints from users about the system’s inability to recognize eligibility for online testing. Other frustrations included difficulties passing the test due to the software’s misidentification of normal actions, such as looking away from the screen or fidgeting, as potential cheating behaviors.
At this time, it remains uncertain if or when the online testing option will return. We will continue to monitor this story and provide updates as more information becomes available. Stay tuned for further developments.
